Using Casstat to Grade Tests

For the purposes of these instructions prompts to the user will be bolded and responses they should give will be in Italics.

Before You Start

You will need the following forms in order to scan

1.    An answer key

2.    The Blue 5 Answer Scan Forms or the Green 10 Answer Scan Forms

3.    An End of Forms sheet

YOU WILL NEED TO CREATE YOUR OWN COPIES OF THESE SHEETS!

Directions for creating an End of Forms:

1.    Use a blank scan form

2.    Write in the name section with a #2 pencil: END OF FORMS and fill in the corresponding bubble below each letter.  Make sure to include all the spaces and the "S" at the end of the word "Forms."

Scanning

1.    Ready> omrgpr <return>

2.    Blue Forms - select option 4

Green Forms - select option 5

FORM NUMBER (DEFAULT IS 0001 OR H FOR HELP)?
Press Enter (unless you want to change the number of the starting form.)

DATE (DEFAULT IS MM/DD/YY OR H FOR HELP)?
Press Enter (unless you want to change the date printed on the forms.)

BATCH NUMBER (DEFAULT IS 1 OR H FOR HELP)?
Press Enter (unless you want to change the batch number.

RUN NUMBER (DEFAULT IS 1 OR H FOR HELP)?
Press Enter (unless you are scanning forms through second time. This option changes where the score is printed on the bottom of the form.)

NUMBER OF KEYS (DEFAULT IS 1 KEY NO SPECIAL CODE OR H FOR HELP)?
Press Enter (unless you have more than 1 answer key. If you do, then you must make sure you have filled out the special code section column P of each form with the number corresponding to the answer key.

3.    Loading the scanner

A.    Place your forms with the key first in the scanner so that the name field is on top and readable to you.

B.    Place an End of Forms sheet at the bottom of the stack. This form tells the scanner when it should stop scanning.

C.    Make sure that you jog the forms well and that they are under the metal lever in the hopper.

D.    Press Enter (your forms should be running through the scanner now).

If you receive an error while scanning, please see the Scanning Errors page.

After Scanning

1.    After the forms are read you must use ftp to transfer them to Frontier so that you can run statistics on them and print out your results.

Ready> ftp username <return>
password: your_Frontier_password <return>
sftpdos>
<return>

If you make a mistake typing in any of the above information type: ftp>bye and then start at the beginning of this step (1 ONLY) again.

2.    Using Casstat to create an output file.

Frontier:~> casstat <return>
Enter the data file name (default is zzzdata)? Press Enter
Do you want heading and footings (default is yes)? Press Enter
Do you want a sorted list (default is yes)? Press Enter
Do you want a post list (default is yes)? Press Enter
Do you want an item analysis list (default is yes)? Press Enter

3.    When you run the casstat command, it should automatically print your files to the laser printer in the Open Work Area.  You can pick up your printouts there.  A description of the output file can be found on the Interpreting the Outfile How To sheet.

4.    To delete the files generated on Frontier:

(Warning: You should always wait for your printout before you delete your data files. This will save you from having to re-scan your forms if the printer develops problems.)

Frontier:~> rm outfile <return>
Frontier:~> rm zzzdata <return>

5.    Logoff the system:

Frontier:~> lo <return>
